Now in Costa Rica it's being blowed by pure dynamite, two large holes in the bowels of a high hill located on the right bank of the river view, located in the community of La Florida Siquirres. This holes are necessary in the construction of two tunnels that are vital in order to redirect the river and allow the construction of the dam which will be the largest hydroelectric plant not only the country but also in Central America.
This plant will have enough power to supply simultaneously 525 thousand Costa Rica Real Estate Properties, more or less the number of homes that are in San José, Cartago and Heredia together, according to data from the last population census.
The workers from the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE from its name in spanish) are making big efforts because it's intended to prevent the country from suffering blackouts during the summer of 2016.
And their efforts are remarkable, during the first 11 months of work they have achieved an significant progress of 20%.
The efficiency in these early stages of construction, will allow to turn on the turbines of the Reventazón plant at the end of 2015.
At the present there are around 1,650 ICE workers in front of the construction of the large Reventazón hydroelectric plant.
When operating Reventazón plant will become the largest hydroelectric plant in Central America. It will have a production or output of 305 megawatts(MW) that means five MW more than the plants El Cajon, Honduras and Fortuna in Panama, that so far are the most powerful.
To make possible the project, the ICE will require $ 2,300 million, for this expensive work, the problem it's the financing.
However, there are a large range of financing options that removes the fear of delaying the project due to lack of resources.
So far, the ICE has the resources to keep the project growing at least two more years, it has considered investing between $ 460 million and $ 700 million.
Progress so far:
-
Eight tunnels that have the function of creating a system of drainage of the dam
Cleaning the land where the machine house will be built
Extraction and breaking of material that will be used to build the dam.
Salient Features
-
The dimensions marked a record for the ICE, with a height of 130 and 527 meters wide, this dam will become the largest built so far in Costa Rica
The reservoir will also be very impressive, not only because it cover an area of 7 m2, but also it have the capacity to store about 118 million cubic meters of water.
