The new year brought good results for the export sector of Costa Rica, because during January there was an increment of the 22% in the exports, according to the same month the year before.

According to the preliminary information from the Exterior Commerce Promoter (Procomer), national exports reached in January an accumulated value of $727,9 millions. It means an increment of $133,5 millions. This behavior of the industrial segment is the one that represents a better performance with a total of $535,58 which represents an increment of the 27%.

Therefore, within this sector it is outstanding the evolution of the food industry, which registered an accumulated value of $99,28 millions. It means a raise of 57%. Additionally, the exports of electronic components of microprocessors obtained an accumulated value of $183 millions which means a raise of 40%.

In the case of the farming sector, the exports registered a total of $174,2 millions, number that represents a raise of 19,1 millions (12,3%), showing a favorable growing in products such as coffee (8%), melon (69,3%) and pineapple (28,6).

In the cattle and fishing sectors, there was a positive performance in the products like milk and all the diverse presentations, which grew 173% concentrated and 543% with no concentration. In general terms, this sector reached in January, an accumulated value of $17,2 millions, number that represented a raise of 12,7%.

International Market

The diversification of the markets for the national products played an important role in the diminishing of the impact that the world recession had over the Tico sales to the exterior.

Up to January 2010, North America, Asia and Europe are confirmed as the main commercial associates of Costa Rica, with participation percentages of 39,7%, 19% and 17,4%, respectively.

The United States continues being the main export destination with a 33% of the total sent to the exterior. To this country, the exportations during January reached a value of $238,4 millions, showing an increment of 6% over the last year.
