Costa Rica News – More than 5,000 new job positions created by multinationals in 2009

29 companies invested $304 million in the country.

More than 5,000 new job positions were created during last year when some enterprises came to the country and the re-investment of the ones already installed.

Those positions were generated by enterprises of medical devices, manufacturing, and high technology services. All this summed $304 million investment and it also represents 80% of the jobs of the sector.

The shared services, contact centers and engineering and software designed among others, have been in the last years the areas with more dynamics. A prove of it is twenty nine enterprises that arrived in 2009. Fifteen correspond to the services area. And other two that are already installed decided to expand operations.

Also, in the developing path, there is an industry of medical devices that caught 6 new operations last year.

One of them was Establishment Biotech which took the decision to have installations dedicated to breast, face and other implants. The investment was $100 million.

The exports of this kind of enterprises in the Free Trade Zone up to the third period of 2009, grew a 12% over 2009. Even that the good exports dropped 8% under this regime.

n case of the advanced manufactured industry there wasn’t a grow. Talking about employment, even they generated 900 new jobs, the year closed with a reduction of 38 job positions in some companies. Optolum, an enterprise of this kind was installed last year to work on lamps for special luxurious commerce.

For this year, the Costa Rican Coalition for developing Initiatives (Cinde, in Spanish) hopes to generate 6,000 new job positions due to 25 new projects that could arrive to the country.

“There is a series of potential initiatives. We have had visits from the manufacturing and services enterprises that have been evaluated the country. In the last months there was an interesting movement of potential investors”, said Gabriela Llobet, General Manager of Cinde.

To continue making the country stronger as an investments destination, there were mentioned 4 aspects in which work must be done: human resources strengthen, infrastructure improvement, paper work and security. English management is highlighted as the most important feature.
