Costa Rica safest country for multinationals

Costa Rica is still the safest nation for the foreigner enterprises while Haiti and Venezuela are the most dangerous countries for the executives of the transnational companies, according to a report about security in Latin Business Chronicle.

Costa Rica Real Estate keeps for the third year in a road in the first place in Latin American for all executives, followed by Chile and Uruguay.

This study, elaborated by the FTI Consulting, places Haiti (#19) at the top of the worst countries, then Venezuela (18), gets a higher position because of the lack of public security and the high degree of danger, Honduras keeps its position (17).

This study highlights Mexico is no longer between the worst of the region, even though the country lives a period of violence and assassinations.

Haiti is the most dangerous country even before the loots produced by the after-earthquake conditions last January 12.

A situation that is deteriorating the condition in Venezuela is the increasing of lack of public security placing it as the second most dangerous country in Latin America for the multinational companies. “The worst economical, together with the blackouts, and the water supply and food interruptions, the political polarization and the worst law instability, have contributed to several kidnappings, violence and extortions”, pointed Frank Holder, director of FTI Consulting, when referring to the South American country.

Even the new police force created during last December, the success to fight against delinquency is been a case, according to the report, that attributed the progressive political misuse of the law as the failure of this initiative.

The number of assassinations in 2009 in Venezuela reached 16 thousand (54 violent deaths for each 100,000 inhabitants), while in 2008 there were only 14 thousand homicides.

In 1999, the year in which Hugo Chavez assumed the power of the government is the South American country, the number of assassinations was 4,550 homicides, according to the Venezuelan Violence Observatory. After El Salvador, Venezuela presents the highest assassination index in Latin America.

Honduras, on its side, has passed from being the seventh most dangerous country for foreigner executives in Latin America to the third. In 2009, the number of assassinations increased 30% compared to the previous year. “The political stability and the violence that hit the country has been on a standby since the election of the new president”, Porfirio Lobo, but “the problem of the ‘maras’ hasn’t been resolved yet”, indicated Holder.
