New road along Costa Rica Border

New Road With the intention to communicate by land to the district of La Cruz to Punta Castilla, in the Pacific, and not to rely on navigation on the controversial San Juan River, Costa Rica is currently building a road network in the northern border.

Almost parallel to the border with the river San Juan, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT) develops the gravel road of approximately 310 miles.

Although the new route aims to link all border communities with Nicaragua, its purpose is to protect the area and fight drug traffic and crime.

For now, the project has already started, with the construction of 70 kilometers of roads, of which 20 kilometers and bridges have been already used by vehicles.

The road that is enabled up to date ranges from Fatima to Delta Sarapiqui Costa Rica, that is, where the River Colorado.

For this project has so far invested more than ¢ 60 million from the state budget, after an emergency decree signed by the President Laura Chinchilla.

Its cost has not been higher since the locals have given up part of their land for construction.

In this sense, civil Costa Ricans will continue touring the area, through San Juan, as established by the International Court of Justice and within a few months, by land. This second option will allow the security forces go across the border, which to date is impossible.

Also, free movement around the region will not be subject to the orders of the army of Nicaragua, which at times has prevented the free movement.

"Costa Rica is not going to give up their rights of free navigation on the San Juan, but does not depend on the arbitrariness and caprice of the Army of Nicaragua," said Jose Maria Tijerina, Minister of Security.

This pathway, which has been called "Road Dignity", complements the work of the new Border Police, which guards the border with Nicaragua.
