Costa Rica is always supporting, now to Haiti Earthquake

Haiti Earthquake

People in Costa Rica who really want to send their donations to the people of Haitihave several ways to help nationally and internationally.

Costa Rican Red Cross and the National Center of Emergencies is asking to the Costa Ricans funds to provide roof and water.

From the other side, the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity enable three numbers to send a text message with donations for 1,000 to the number 5102, for 5,000 the number 5205 or to the 5210 for donating 10,000 colones. All the complete funds will go directly to the Red Cross. People have up to January 25 to send a text message.

Until two days ago, according to a press release from the institution, among the generosity from the people and the enterprises there were 56 million colones in the bank accounts.

Besides, the Red Cross has a collection center located in Pavas, 300 meters north and 250 meters east of the end of the Rohrmoser Boulevard in the Municipality of San José Complex.

The Red Cross will receive only canned foods that do not required cooking. All food with less than 6 months to perish will be rejected, including glass containers.

Milk is not going to be received (liquid or powder), as well as medicines, clothes, toys or shoes. Other supplies for personal hygiene are well received such as diapers, pads, soap and toilet pape

According to the Red Cross units in Haiti, it is urgent the temporary roofs and the supply of clean and drinkable water and its proper treatment. Costa Rican Red Cross announced that the money will have that specific purpose.

From the other side, the Costa Rican government sent to Haiti a group of 55 people among them people from the Red Cross, personnel from the National Emergency Commission (CNE, in Spanish), police force, doctors and firefighters who will assists during 10 days. All these people are specialized in search and victim rescue in collapsed structures

Help is getting massively to Haiti

Help is getting massively to Haiti, but some logistics issues aren’t helping to benefit the Earthquake survivors after last Tuesday. People now are showing desperation with loots and violence. Meanwhile more updates are getting out to the light. 70% of the buildings in Port-au-Prince have been destroyed.

Day by Day, the possibility to find survivors is decreasing. But there is still hope, under the rubbles of the Hotel Montana there were found 23 people alive.

Thousands of people are still living outdoors, even though the aftershocks were less yesterday (only one).

Water and food scarce and whatever is left for selling is extremely expensive. The people continue without communication except for satellite. The smell of rotten corpses is everywhere and the dust of the fallen constructions makes the air impossible to breathe.

There is no transportation due to lack of gas and the roads and highways are impassable, and whatever is left from the hospitals is not enough.

The most important warehouse of the United Nations World Food Program was looted. Metropole Radio informed that the need of police presence is making the insecurity bigger; shootings and robberies are being part of Port-au-Prince.

Some Haitians crossed the border to the Dominican Republic territory to buy food, water and other merchandise in the bi-national market celebrated every Monday and Friday in the Province of Dajabón.

Haiti has received several millions of dollars in private and public donations from the United States and other countries. However, the donors are demanding the proper use of that money.

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world. People live with $2 per day, almost have of the population is illiterate and the government has its history on instability. Main reasons why the management of those donations won’t be an easy task to follow.
